Taxonomy
Sphaeronitidae was named by Neumayr (1889). It is the type family of Sphaeronitida.
It was reranked as the superfamily Sphaeronitoidea by Prokop (1964).
It was assigned to Diploporita by Prokop (1964); to Glyptosphaeritidacea by Mergl and Prokop (2006); to Diploporita by Jell (2010); and to Sphaeronitida by Regnéll (1945), Beaver et al. (1967), Paul and Bockelie (1983), Bockelie (1984), Sheffield and Sumrall (2017).
It was reranked as the superfamily Sphaeronitoidea by Prokop (1964).
