Ptychoglyptus ambiguus was named by Reed (1952). Its type specimen is Sowerbyella (Rugosowerbyella) ambigua and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Sowerbyella (Rugosowerbyella) ambigua by Mitchell (1977); it was recombined as Rugosowerbyella ambigua by Cocks (2013), Cocks (2014).
