Gapparodus was named by Abaimova (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-l Cm Dres Sepkoski's reference number: 655]. Its type is Hertzina bisulcata.

It was assigned to Furnishinidae by Clark et al. (1981); to Paraconodontida by Müller and Hinz (1991); to Protoconodontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protoconodonta by Kouchinsky et al. (2011).
