Callocystites was named by Hall (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Callocystitidae, Callocystitinae.
It was assigned to Callocystitinae by Beaver et al. (1967); to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Callocystitidae by Paul and Rozhnov (2016).
