Taxonomy
Macrocystella was named by Callaway (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Llde Sepkoski's reference number: 330,532]. Its type is Macrocystella mariae. It is the type genus of Macrocystellidae.

It was assigned to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macrocystellidae by Sprinkle (1973), Mergl and Prokop (2006), Zamora et al. (2009).
