Plethoschisma was named by Sprinkle (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 325]. Its type is Plethoschisma grandis.
It was assigned to Pleurocystitidae by Sprinkle (1974); to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002); and to Deltacystinae by Sumrall and Sprinkle (1995), Nardin and Bohatý (2013).
