Ptilichnus hydrodromus was named by Hitchcock (1858). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Lily Pond Quarry, Gill, which is in a Hettangian fluvial-lacustrine siltstone/sandstone in the Turners Falls Formation of Massachusetts.
