Taxonomy
Rhipidocystis was named by Jaekel (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 805,1066]. Its type is Rhipidocystis gigas. It is the type genus of Rhipidocystidae.

It was assigned to Rhipidocystidae by Beaver et al. (1967); and to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002).
