Stichocystis was named by Jaekel (1918). It is not extant. Its type is Caryocystis geometrica. It is the type genus of Stichocystidae.
It was assigned to Stichocystidae by Regnéll (1945), Beaver et al. (1967); to Caryocystitidae by Bockelie (1981); and to Rhombifera by Sepkoski (2002).
