Trematocystis was named by Miller (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-m S Wenl Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Trematocystinae.
It was assigned to Diploporita by Sepkoski (2002); to Trematocystinae by Frest et al. (2011); and to Holocystitidae by Jell (2010), Sheffield and Sumrall (2017).
