Lepidocystis was named by Foerste (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 654]. Its type is Lepidocystis wanneri. It is the type genus of Lepidocystidae.
It was assigned to Imbricata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lepidocystidae by Beaver et al. (1967), Wang et al. (2024).
