Tatonkacystis was named by Sumrall et al. (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran]. Its type is Tatonkacystis codyensis.

It was assigned to Trachelocrinidae by Sumrall et al. (1997); and to Eocrinoidea by Sepkoski (2002).

Sumrall et al. 1997Theca elongate, nearly twice as long as wide; bearing about 65 hexagonal ridged thecal plates per side; thecal plates without epispires, aligned in columns, wider than long; summit developed into constricted spout with five large biserial arms bearing smaller brachioles every third to fourth plate; stem long, holomeric, enlarged, nodal every 16-18 columnals.
