Ctenocystis was named by Robison and Sprinkle (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l Cm uMid-m Sepkoski's reference number: 713]. It is not extant. Its type is Ctenocystis utahensis. It is the type genus of Ctenocystidae.
It was assigned to Ctenocystoidea by Robison and Sprinkle (1969) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Ctenocystidae by Sprinkle and Robison (1978), Jell et al. (1985) and Rahman and Clausen (2009).
