Insulipora was named by Finks (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l Sepkoski's reference number: 203]. Its type is Insulipora elegans.

It was assigned to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chiastoclonellidae by Finks et al. (2004).
