Exlinella was named by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Exlinella frizzelli. It is the type genus of Exlinellidae.
It was assigned to Exlinellidae by Deflandre-Rigaud (1962), Frizzell and Exline (1966); and to Molpadiida by Sepkoski (2002).
