Taxonomy
Palaeocucumaria was named by Lehmann (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 947]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeocucumaria hunsrueckiana. It is the type genus of Palaeocucumariidae. It was considered monophyletic by Kerr and Kim (2001).

It was assigned to Palaeocucumariidae by Frizzell and Exline (1966), Boczarowski (2001); to Holothuroidea by Lehmann (1958), Kerr and Kim (2001); and to Arthrochirotida by Sepkoski (2002).
