Taxonomy
Lepidaster was named by Forbes (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u]. Its type is Lepidaster grayi. It is the type genus of Lepidasteridae.

It was assigned to Lepidactinidae by Spencer (1918); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lepidasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Herringshaw et al. (2007), Blake (2018).

L. G. Herringshaw et al. 2007Multi-rayed lepidasterids with large central disc. Very large oval madreporite in oral interradius, ornamented with radial striae. Inferomarginals form fanshaped array of triangulate to dentiform ossicles in oral interradii. Mouth angle plates and circumorals separated from marginal frame by numerous small actinals.
