Trimeraster was named by Schöndorf (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Trimeraster parvulus.

It was assigned to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Xenasteridae by Schöndorf (1909), Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
