Taxonomy
Cnemidactis was named by Spencer (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1066]. Its type is Urasterella girvanensis. It is the type genus of Cnemidactinidae.

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Urasterellinae by Dean Shackleton (2005); to Urasterellidae by Blake and Rozhnov (2007); and to Cnemidactinidae by Spencer (1918), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake and Guensburg (1993), Blake (2018).
