Permaster was named by Kesling (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Permaster grandis. It is the type genus of Permasteridae.

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Neopalaeasteridae by Kesling (1969), Blake and Elliott (2003); and to Permasteridae by Blake (2018).
