Salteraster was named by Stürtz (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l S Sepkoski's reference number: 239]. Its type is Palaeaster asperrima.
It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Schuchert (1915) and Dean Shackleton (2005).
It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Urasterellidae by Spencer (1918), Withers and Keble (1934), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake and Rozhnov (2007), Blake and Koniecki (2020) and Müller and Hahn (2022).
It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Schuchert (1915) and Dean Shackleton (2005).
