Taxonomy

Urasterella was named by McCoy (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde C Mosc Sepkoski's reference number: 248]. Its type is Uraster ruthveni. It is the type genus of Urasterellidae.

It was assigned to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); to Urasterellinae by Dean Shackleton (2005); and to Urasterellidae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1918), Withers and Keble (1934), Lehmann (1957), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake and Rozhnov (2007), Blake (2018), Blake and Koniecki (2020).

It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966).

It was assigned to Asteroidea by Lehmann (1957).
Palasteracanthion was named by Stürtz (1886).

It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Schuchert (1915).
Phillipaster was named by Spencer (1950) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeaster coronella.

It was synonymized subjectively with Urasterella by Dean Shackleton (2005), Blake and Rozhnov (2007).

It was assigned to Urasterellidae by Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002).
