Taxonomy
Arthraster was named by Forbes (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Arthraster dixoni. It is the type genus of Arthrasterinae, Arthrasteridae. It was considered monophyletic by Villier (2010), Gale (2020).

It was assigned to Arthrasterinae by Spencer (1918), Spencer and Wright (1966); to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002), Villier (2010); and to Chaetasteridae by Gale (2020).

Gale 2020Long-armed, robust chaetasterids, in which the extraxial arm is constructed of 7 rows of ossicles, including 1 row of large radials, paired rows of supero- and inferomarginals and broad actinals.
