Indiaster was named by Rao (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-u]. Its type is Indiaster krishna.

It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Rao (1957), Spencer and Wright (1966); to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Radiasteridae by Blake and Reboul (2011), Blake et al. (2018).

V.R. Rao 1957	Strikingly short marginal plates; interradial areas with narrow elliptical or rod shaped plates arranged roughly radially to the mouth area and forming low, parallel arcs between the adambulacral and marginal plates which they meet roughly at right angle.
W. K. Spencer and C. W. Wright 1966	Small, very short marginals. Interradial area on oral surface with rows of rod-shaped ossicles that simulate metapinules.
