Nautilus angustatus was named by Conrad (1849). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Astoria (Townsend collection), which is in a Burdigalian marine shale in the Astoria Formation of Oregon.
It was recombined as Aturia angustata by Dall (1914), Schenck (1931), Durham (1944), Miller and Downs (1950), Moore (1963), Moore (1976), Moore (1984).
