Subvestinautilus rector was named by Shimanskiy (1967). Its type specimen is PIN 1193/320, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kzyl-Dzhal creek, Kara-Kingir River, which is in a Visean marine horizon in Kazakhstan.
