Peripetoceras tormentum was named by Shimanskiy (1967). Its type specimen is PIN 1192/735, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Govardovskiy quarry, which is in a Brigantian/Serpukhovian marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
