Cactocrinus was named by Wachsmuth and Springer (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 986]. It is not extant. Its type is Actinocrinus proboscidialis. It is the type genus of Cactocrininae.
It was assigned to Cactocrininae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); and to Monobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
