Megistocrinus was named by Owen and Shumard (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 986].

It was assigned to Batocrinidae by Laudon (1936); to Periechocrininae by Goldring (1936); and to Monobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
