Tarantocrinus was named by Webster and Lane (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 704]. Its type is Tarantocrinus typus.

It was assigned to Coelocrinidae by Webster and Lane (1987); and to Monobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
