Taxonomy
Ascarites gerus was named by Poinar and Boucot (2006). Its type specimen is OSU Y2 852 (2), an egg, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sainte-Barbe coal mine, Bernissart, which is in a Barremian/Aptian lacustrine - small claystone/bituminous coal in the Sainte-Barbe Clays Formation of Belgium.
