Charactocrinus was named by Brett (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 250]. It is not extant. Its type is Charactocrinus pustulosus.
It was assigned to Disparida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Calceocrinidae by Ausich (1998) and Ausich and Copper (2010).
