Taxonomy
Coluber berus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Pelias.

It was recombined as Vipera berus by Daudin (1803); it was recombined as Pelias berus by Merrem (1820), Gray (1842); it was recombined as Vipera (Pelias) berus by Szyndlar and Zerova (1992), Zerova (1993).
