Taxonomy
Coluber aspis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Vipera, Vipera (Vipera).

It was recombined as Vipera aspis by Mertens and Müller (1928); it was recombined as Vipera (Vipera) aspis by Szyndlar and Zerova (1992).
