Patellispongia was named by Bassler (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 880]. Its type is Patellispongia oculata.

It was assigned to Archaeoscyphidae by Bassler (1927); to Anthaspidellidae by Johns (1994); and to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002).
