Agassizocrinus was named by Owen and Shumard (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 906]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Agassizocrinidae, Agassizocrinacea.

It was assigned to Agassizocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Articuliformes by Wright (2017).
