Aphelecrinus was named by Kirk (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Serp-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Aphelecrinus elegans. It is the type genus of Aphelecrinidae.

It was assigned to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); to Aphelecrinidae by Strimple (1967), Lane et al. (2001), Kammer and Roeser (2012); and to Articuliformes by Wright (2017).
