Scincosaurus spinosus was named by Civet (1982). Its type specimen is MNHN (no number known), a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Montceau-les-Mines, Saone et Loire, which is in a Stephanian B/Stephanian C terrestrial horizon in France.
