Coenocystis was named by Girty (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Guad-u]. Its type is Coenocystis richardsoni.

It was assigned to Acariaiocrininae by Arendt (1970); to Streblocrininae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); to Acariaiocrinidae by Arendt (1981); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Streblocrinidae by Webster and Webster (2012).
