Histocrinus was named by Kirk (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 906]. Its type is Poteriocrinus grandis.

It was assigned to Scytalocrinidae by Campbell and Bein (1971); and to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002).
