Nautilus inornatus was named by d'Orbigny (1843). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.B48600 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cenoceras inornatus by Kummel (1956) and Enay et al. (1994); it was recombined as Ligeiceras inornatum by Barroso-Barcenilla (2011).
