Neochelys liriae was named by Pérez-García and Lapparent de Broin (2013). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.EBA515, a partial skeleton (a complete and articulated shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Soleillades, which is in a Ypresian terrestrial sandstone/marl in the Grès d'Assignan Formation of France.
