Gastrioceras kesslerense was named by Mather (1915).

It was recombined as Pseudoparalegoceras kesslerense by McCaleb (1963); it was recombined as Pseudoparalegoceras (Phaneroceras) kesslerense by Gordon (1964); it was recombined as Phaneroceras kesslerense by Nassichuk (1975).
