Proindocrinus was named by Yakovlev (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Indocrinus piszowi.

It was assigned to Indocrininae by Arendt (1981); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Indocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978), Webster and Webster (2012), Webster et al. (2025).
