Protencrinus was named by Jeakel (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Leon]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Protencrinidae.

It was assigned to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); to Articuliformes by Wright (2017); and to Protencrinidae by Webster (2012), Mao et al. (2018).
