Taxonomy
Phymatella was named by Zittel (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 642,1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Phymatellinae.

It was assigned to Tetracladina by Hinde (1883); to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phymatellinae by Finks et al. (2004).
