Cottaldia was named by Desor (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1043].

It was assigned to Diadematidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Arbaciidae by Fell and Pawson (1966); and to Phymosomatoida by Smith (1991), Sepkoski (2002).
