Taxonomy

Sowerbyella musculosa was named by Williams (1963). Its type specimen is BB 29083-4, a valve (counterpart ventral internal and external mould.), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Upper Allt Ddu Group, Caradoc, Bala District, Merionethshire, which is in a Soudleyan offshore mudstone/siltstone in the Allt Ddu Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Sowerbyella (Sowerbyella) musculosa by Cocks (2010).
