Occidens portlocki was named by Clack and Ahlberg (2004). Its type specimen is GSM 28498, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is near Maghera/Draperstown, Londonderry, which is in a Tournaisian/Visean terrestrial horizon in the United Kingdom.
