Amphiope was named by Agassiz (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 679].

It was assigned to Astriclypeidae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
